Shale gas and fracking: examining the evidence

چکیده
The fact that the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states that natural gas power technology is a ‘bridge technology’ does not necessarily imply that shale gas will play any significant role in curbing GHG emissions. Indeed, we note that the median scenarios presented in AR5 for stabilising atmospheric concentrations between 430ppm and 530ppm indicate that total carbon emissions from all natural gas sources would be about 100 GtC (Figure 6.15, Chapter 6). This is about the same size as the carbon locked up in the world’s current reserves of conventional gas (Figure 7.2, Chapter 7). Hence, burning any of the reserves of unconventional gas (including shale gas), without Carbon

The U.K.’s ‘‘Dash for Gas’’: A Rapid Evidence Assessment of Fracking for Shale Gas, Regulation, and Public Health
The evidence on public health regulation of the unconventional gas extraction (fracking) industry was examined using a rapid evidence assessment of fifteen case studies from multiple countries. They included scientific and academic papers, professional reports, government agency reports, industry and industry-funded reports, and a nongovernment organization report. Each case study review was st...

The UK has had its fair share of the shale gas revolutionary waves blowing across the global oil and gas industry at present. Although, its exploitation is widely agreed to have been delayed, shale gas was looked upon favorably by the UK Parliament when they recognized it as genuine energy source and granted licenses to industry to search and extract the resource. This, although a significant p...
متن کاملThe rush to drill for natural gas: a public health cautionary tale.
Efforts to identify alternative sources of energy have focused on extracting natural gas from vast shale deposits. The Marcellus Shale, located in western New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, is estimated to contain enough natural gas to supply the United States for the next 45 years. New drilling technology-horizontal drilling and high-volume hydraulic fracturing of shale (fracking)-has made gas ...
متن کاملAn institutional theory of hydraulic fracturing policy
a r t i c l e i n f o The use of high-volume horizontal hydraulic fracturing (fracking) has increased substantially over the past five years in the United States. Use of this drilling technology to extract natural gas from hitherto impermeable shale is expected to increase even more in coming decades. Two institutions, integration contracts and well spacing requirements, evolved to mitigate the...
